![]() ![]() She rattles off a list of names in the current and previous parliaments. She has no regrets, but she still asks: "Why are they still in power and why are Western governments supporting them?" It still may cost her her life but she wanted to expose the crimes of the rulers. Many in parliament didn't dare speak out, she says. She knew that her speech to the Loya Jirga was an opportunity to share her views, and those of justice-loving people both in her country and abroad, with the international community. Questions like: Who did that, and why?Īlthough she prefers to be a social activist she was in a political situation and couldn't sit in silence. She read lots of books and asked lots of questions of her father and her teachers because she couldn't understand how criminals were permitted to run the country. She was lucky to receive an education and after high school became a social activist. Her family fled to Iran when she was four, then to Pakistan when she was seven. She describes herself as being "of the war generation". I asked her what sparked her interest in activism and politics. Her approach to life and death accords with that of Khalil Gibran. But if she were to face death, "I would have no regrets because I have spoken the truth, the truth of my people". She doesn't fear death she fears political silence. She says she doesn't think about death, only the hopes she has for her country. Joya also laughed about how she really enjoyed Charlie Chaplin films: some things are universal. Kathy's history of Afghanistan from 1986 to the present is available here and is a 'must watch'. Kathy Gannon's "I is for Infidel, From Holy War to Holy Terror: 18 Years in Afghanistan" gets an honourable mention. Joya spoke candidly about the books that have influenced her. But the real struggle is between progressive Afghan women and men, and a phalanx of regressive forces… What's taking place in Afghanistan is commonly depicted as it is on the Time cover, as a battle of the forces of freedom, democracy and women's rights (that is, the US and the Karzai government) against the demon Taliban. ![]() Several husbands of prominent working women have been killed for not keeping their wives at home, and many are threatened. We might do well to consider that every Afghan woman or girl who still goes to school does so with the support of a progressive husband or father. Her background reminded me of Ann Jones' article 'Women at risk from the Demon within': She is pleased to describe her mother as a housewife, although through Joya's education her mother later became her student. Her parents always stressed the importance of education and her father in particular inculcated in her the fact that her brothers were no better than her. ![]() She describes her Dad as "democratically minded". In the first place, rather than be characterised by ethnic or tribal links, Joya prefers to be called Afghan "in the interests of national unity". ![]() She was travel-weary but willing to share her experience and knowledge of the reality of life in Afghanistan. I took the opportunity to catch up with Joya in Hobart. She hasn't yet had the ear of the Prime Minister or the Minister for Defence to discuss the plight of her people or the reality of the war in Afghanistan, but perhaps if Prime Minister Gillard broke bread with Joya she might gain some real insight into the consequences of Australia's involvement in Afghanistan. Activist, writer and a former Afghan politician Malalai Joya is currently touring the country. ![]()

But Judgment Day still happens, just later down the line with the AI system Legion replacing Skynet, and the future of the Resistance no longer dependent on the messianic John Connor, but Dani Ramos. As Sarah Connor puts it, he was killed by a future that no longer exists. Shortly after the events of T2 and the prevention of Judgment Day, John Connor (Edward Furlong) is killed by a Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a backup activated in result of the T-1000’s failure. ![]() Let’s look at where Dark Fate goes, and where such a series could go next if granted life. Distributor Netflix already has a deal with Paramount, and seeing the continuing adventures of Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes) and Sarah Connor (( Linda Hamilton) play out in that format may be worth exploring. Given Dark Fate‘s box office struggles, another film sequel is likely in doubt. While the theatrical window for this Terminator series may be over, perhaps the franchise can find favor with audiences and continue on through a streaming series. Ignoring the previous entries post- T2, Dark Fate presents itself as the true Terminator 3 and opens with a major plot point that shifts the story in a new direction. Much like Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Creed (2015) and Halloween (2018), Dark Fate is a legacy sequel that feels like a recalibration of the franchise, a reconsideration of what Terminator is as a property in a way that recognizes the best parts of the past while forging ahead. But should they take one more chance, they’ll find themselves experiencing a story that’s worth investing in and seeing continue. The box office tells another story, with the pic is stalling in its domestic debut, where it is expected to bow to around $27 million.Īudiences may be skeptical of a new installment after being burned by Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), Terminator Salvation (2009) and Terminator Genisys (2015). At least, it looks bright in terms of story and narrative possibilities for the future. For the first time in almost 30 years, the future of the franchise looks bright thanks to Tim Miller’s Terminator: Dark Fate. For the first time in almost 30 years, we have a Terminator sequel that actually feels akin to Cameron’s first two films, The Terminator (1984) and T2. Not only is this change true of the in-narrative post-apocalyptic wasteland that sees mankind making its final stand against machines, but it’s also true of the Terminator franchise, which seemed stuck in a perpetual state of mediocrity following the greatness of James Cameron’s T2: Judgment Day (1991). ![]() ![]() ![]() In 1980 plaintiff learned that several of the 1975 photographs had appeared in a French magazine called “Photo” and, disturbed by that publication and by information that defendant intended others, she attempted to buy the negatives. Over the years defendant has also photographed plaintiff for Penthouse Magazine, New York Magazine and for advertising by the Courtauldts and Avon companies. Indeed, plaintiff subsequently used the photos in a book that she published about herself and to do so her mother obtained an authorization from defendant to use them. * After the pictures were taken, they were used not only in “Sugar and Spice” but also, to the knowledge of plaintiff and her mother, in other publications and in a display of larger-than-life photo enlargements in the windows of a store on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Before the photographic sessions, plaintiff’s mother and legal guardian, Teri Shields, executed two consents in favor of defendant. It was intended that these photos would be used in a publication entitled “Portfolio 8” (later renamed “Sugar and Spice”). One of the jobs, a series of photographs to be financed by Playboy Press, required plaintiff to pose nude in a bathtub. For many years prior to these events she had been a child model and in 1975, when she was 10 years of age, she obtained several modeling jobs with defendant through her agent, the Ford Model Agency. That document included an appeals court opinion authored by two judges, indicating that at 15, Shields legally sought to withdraw the image set from circulation due to distress and embarrassment. We were able to find a 1981 lawsuit: Shields v. It was one of a dozen images of Shields designed, according to Gross, to reveal the not-so-latent sexuality of the prepubescent child. The original picture, for which Shields was paid $450, was taken by fashion photographer Garry Gross in 1975 for a Playboy publication titled Sugar and Spice. ![]() Intent on questioning notions of authorship and originality, he rephotographed an existing image that had already inspired two years of legal debate. Prince, Schorr tells me, has never met Shields. “I found it really disturbing, but my impression always was that Richard made the piece because it was disturbing … It tells you everything about what we fear and desire.” “I always thought that it was a perverse picture,” says Schorr, who has since made a documentary about Prince, and befriended Shields when she photographed the actor/model last year for Interview magazine. When artist Collier Schorr sublet Prince’s studio in the 1980s, the photograph was hanging in the hallway. She has, in Prince’s description, “a body with two different sexes, maybe more, and a head that looks like it’s got a different birthday.” It shows a 10-year-old Shields, oiled and glistening, naked and made-up, posing in a marble bathtub with a seductive danger that belies her years. The Richard Prince photograph of Brooke Shields that Tate Modern recently withdrew from the exhibition Pop Life, after Scotland Yard suggested it might break obscenity laws, travelled across the Atlantic carrying a long history of controversy. The photographs did not appear in Playboy, but they were shown in a related publication called Sugar ‘n’ Spice: It provided a recounting of a controversy involving photographs captured of a then-ten-year-old Brooke Shields in 1975 (not 1976). ![]() In 2009, the Guardian published a story about the image and its photographer Garry Gross. No comment, sources, or citations were provided, and a watermark on the image suggested that it originated elsewhere earlier. In 1976 Playboy published nude photos of Brooke Shields, who was just TEN YEARS OLD at the time! The image featured a heavily made-up small girl who looked quite a lot like Shields and an inserted image of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner covering her presumably naked body, with text that read: Advertisements In March 2019, the following meme appeared (archived here), containing a claim that Brooke Shields had been photographed suggestively for Playboy magazine when she was just ten years old: ![]() ![]() ![]() “George and I became friends and I used to go and hang out at his place in the country near Henley. “There was this strange thing of meeting someone who was very famous and then going to the pub and having a beer with them and just being very normal,” he remembers. I had a flat in the Kings Road and my girlfriend was a model. Within a couple of years he’d opened his own studio and was enjoying life at the hub of the Swinging 60s. He got a job, starting at the bottom – as a junior assistant at the Mayflower Studio in London sweeping the floor and making the tea – before moving on to Studio Five where he found himself working with David Bailey and his career as a fashion photographer took off, just as British fashion itself was taking off. ![]() ![]() So he went to St Martin’s College Of Art in London where he became interested in photography. But after his Western education, a return to the stultifying privilege of the Raj was equally unthinkable. “My family background meant that work was not really on the agenda because we already owned everything,” says Singh with a smile. At the age of six he was sent to boarding school in England and, after his mother moved to London, had a public school education at the somewhat progressive St Christopher’s College in Letchworth, Hertfordshire. His mother was the daughter of an Austrian society photographer. His father was the Raja of Kalakankar, a province in Northern India by the Ganges. Singh’s background is the kind of culture clash that flourished amid the new meritocracy that was another feature of the decade. ![]() |
